In a recent weight loss study by an Australian research group which was recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine, it was found that soon after losing weight dieters experienced hormone changes that caused a marked increase in appetite. The result of a hormonally driven increase in appetite led people back into the kitchen to replace what they worked so hard to lose!
Even after a year of the participants being held to a strict diet to maintain the weight that was lost, it was found that their hormone levels and metabolism had still not returned to pre-study levels. Even after all the effort it took to lose the weight and keep it off, the body still fights to gain its lost fat a year later! Not only that, their hormones were causing them to feel even more hungry than they were before starting the study.
While the study sample was small and requires a lot more research, our physicians have long known that any diet that does not take hormone modulation into account is doomed to failure, and this is a perfect example of one of the many reasons why.
